COMING SOON

TIBET: CRY OF THE SNOW LION
If you're up for learning a lot about the history of Tibetans, then this is the film to see. Without knowing about every film out there, I can almost say that this might be the most important picture out there. I'm sure that folks from the flipside of the coin will say that this film is propaganda, but the good money says that this film shows Tibetans getting screwed by the man, which in this case is the Chinese government. Remember the concerts for Tibet? The big press surrounding this nation and its people? Where did it all go? What's been going on since? How did the nation come about? This film will take you from way early in the country's development through the 20th century, which is basically the beginning of their end. Ideally, you should see this and hopefully act on it, but even if you don't, just the knowledge of what's going on at the "rooftop of the world" is worth the price of a ticket. -EN

ZATOICHI directed by Takeshi Kitano
It's going to be a fun one. Beat Takeshi puts his filmmaking stamp on the classic Japanese series and does a great job at playing Zatoichi! You won't get the fake sword fighting that Hollywood films give you, but you will see something that's more than fighting; there's actually a story. The film does retain elements of the original. You have the courtesans, the local evil samurai gangs, the older lady and family that the Zatoichi of the past always seems to befriend, and then there's the good vs evil element. Takeshi also makes sure that you get his slow and wide scenic shots, strange interludes with weird characters, and a theatrical performance element. Will this be the start of a new Zatoichi series? So far the $25 million box office receipts in Japan are a good indication. -EN

If you can't wait til then, join us at VC FilmFest 2004 where we will be co-presenting Tokuzo Tanaka's ZATOICHI series (3, 4 and 5) and Kitano's ZATOICHI on Closing Night (May 6) (we're also presenters of Takashi Miike's GOZU!!).
